Hello Everyone,
I am fairly new to Ansys, just as a quick disclaimer.Â
I want to simulate the melting process of fine-grained, rocky material and subsequent natural convection in a rotational symmetrical crucible and vacuum conditions.
Is the lattice Boltzmann method suited for this task or are there other simpler approaches?
Two-way interaction between melt and particles as well as permeability should be considered.

If it's a vacuum system you'll break most flow solvers as they're designed to work in the continuum regime. But from what you want to model that may be something you can neglect.Â
You've got some reading to do:
- Ansys Fluent's Eulerian Granular model could work, with three phases and a phase mass transfer function to move solid to liquid phases.Â
- Ansys Rocky is a DEM solver, with some SPH functionality. The granular heating is OK, but I'm less sure how well it'll cope with the particle count and how the melt flows.Â
Not really a good starting project!Â

Thanks for the recommendations :)
I will have to check whether neglecting vacuum has a strong influence.
For the suggestions, I will try both appoaches. DEM is most definitely going to require to much computing power, but I will try.
