Low velocity impact of Honeycomb core using Explicit Dynamics

I'm trying low-velocity impact test at 5 m/s at hexagonal honeycomb core. The impactor is rigid, honeycomb is modelled as shell and the lower plate is rigid. The impactor is at 5 mm distance from the honeycomb, lower plate is at 1 mm distance from the honeycomb. The impactor is given a constant velocity of 5 m/s.

I am not able to get correct crush behaviour.

Experimentally the honeycomb should start folding from either end but as can be seen in the figure below mine is starting to buckle at the middle of its height.

I have given a frictional body interaction for all bodies, self body contact is enabled, frictional contact between edges of honeycomb and impactor/ lower plate.

      Please help me out.

Ahmad, what materials are you using? I see some hourglass modes in your model and the possible reason for the unexpected behavior. Look at the energies for energies and material model parameters.

       Thank you for your reply.

I am using Aluminium for honeycomb with Bilinear Isotropic hardening model. For impactor, steel. Properties for both and the energy diagram is given below.

The paper I am following has used Belytschko-Tsay Shell 163 elements with Bilinear kinematic hardening material model for honeycomb.

Hi, sorry if I write to you for another purpose, but I'm an Engineering student and I'm trying to do some Explicit Dynamics in Ansys with a Honeycomb.

The problem is that I don't know ('cause I'm new to this world) how to create a Honeycomb (with Inventor for instance) without having as a result a simulation that lasts weeks. If you can give me a help I'd be really grateful,.

      Have a good day.

@Simone, this post shows that there is a honeycomb generator in DesignModeler.
