It is true that the free Ansys Student license, which includes SpaceClaim, has no ability to save in any neutral file format.  Years ago, the free Ansys Student version of SpaceClaim had a limit of 50 bodies, but could save in all neutral files.  Then one year, they changed it to allow unlimited number of bodies, but limited saving to the .scdoc format only.

Ansys has various licenses for Academic institutions. Research licenses have no limits and have a purchase and annual cost. Teaching licenses have some limits and cost less. Student licenses have the most limits and are free. Contact Ansys and request a quote for Research and Teaching licenses for you and your lab.  Students can use the free license on their personal computers to do some design work, and bring their .scdoc file to the lab to export to neutral files.
