Ansys Student is valid for one year because it's for educational purposes, it's enough to learn on and then you update to the latest version as you'll be using the campus system for research projects.
Regarding Win8 and 8.1, it was released in 2012 and Win10 came out in 2015. I don't think we ever used it internally, and can't remember ever supporting it. I know I upgraded my home PC from Win7 to Win10 as part of the free migration, and suspect most others did too. Win8 will be lacking many of the dll's etc that are required by the Ansys software, hence some of the other issues you're facing.
