FDTD simulation freezes the PC when using the GPU

      Hello together,

I am trying to run a ring resonator simulation via the FDTD solver on the GPU instead of the CPU. For smaller simulation areas and a small simulation time the CPU and GPU both work without issue.
However, when the simulation area is bigger and the simulation time is increased in order to get the simulation running until autoshutoff, only the CPU simulation does run. When using the GPU, the simulation still meshes, but after few seconds of showing "Running" the whole PC freezes and has to manually restarted.
The PC has a RTX 3060 with 12 GB of memory.
Is there be any setting I could try to get this running via the GPU, or is the simulation just too demanding for our graphics card?

      Kind regards,
      Matthias Hoormann

      Hi Matthias,

Can you check the simulation memory requirements when you increase the area and the simulation time? It might be more than the memory on your GPU.

Thank you for the advice. The memory requirement is significantly larger than the memory on the GPU.
I think this might be the problem.

      Kind regards,
      Matthias

If the memory required to run the simulation is more than 12 GB, you will not be able to run the job with GPU. Either upgrade to a better GPU with more vDRAM or run using only with CPU.
